Professor Sheng-Po Hao, MD, FICS, will deliver the “Eugene N. Myers, MD International Lecture on Head and Neck Cancer” at 9:30 am Tuesday in Room 414AB, addressing the treatment of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC).

“It will be my greatest honor to be the 2014 Myers Lecturer at the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting,” he said. “This great honor is really an ‘impossible dream’ for me.”

Dr. Hao claims Dr. Myers as his mentor. He was Dr. Myers’ international fellow at the University of Pittsburgh from 1992 to 1993.

“I learned everything about head and neck oncology from him,” Dr. Hao said. “I am fortunate to practice what I have learned from Dr. Myers in America, on my patients in Taiwan. To establish and reach the so-called American standard of care for head and neck cancer patients in Taiwan, I initiated and actually built up the Taiwan Head and Neck Society in 2005. I follow in the footsteps of Dr. Myers, who served as the committee chair of the AAO-HNSF International Affairs Committee, to establish the Asian Society of Head and Neck Oncology (ASHNO). ASHNO is now well recognized as the major head and neck society in Asia.”

Dr. Hao is professor and chairman of the department of otolaryngology of Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital and Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan, said he’s delighted to see the Taiwan Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Society recognized as a corresponding society of AAO-HNSF.

He is a graduate of Taipei Medical College, Taiwan, and completed his residency at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. An International Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery in Pittsburgh with Dr. Myers followed.

Dr. Hao became professor and chairman of the department of otolaryngology, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Chang Gung University, Taiwan, in 2005, and he moved to his current position, as professor and chairman of the department of otolaryngology and program director of otolaryngology at Fu-Jen University, in 2010. Dr. Hao is a specialist in both head and neck cancer surgery and skull base surgery. He has published hundreds of articles and book chapters on the subject. He published “Oral Cancer: Symptoms, Management and Risk Factors (Cancer Etiology, Diagnosis and Treatments)” in 2013.

Dr. Hao is a past president of the Taiwan Head and Neck Society and the Taiwan Skull Base Society. He is the founding president of the Asian Society of Head and Neck Oncology and Taiwan Oral Cancer Prevention and Therapy Association. Dr. Hao also serves as an executive member in the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncological Society and also on the Head and Neck Committee in International Federation of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.

Leslie Nicholas, MD, endowed the Eugene N. Myers, MD International Lecture on Head and Neck Cancer in 1991 in honor of his nephew, Eugene N. Myers, MD, past president of the AAO-HNS/F. Dr. Myers is known for his dedication to management of head and neck cancer and his interest in international medicine.
