Director to Discuss Research at Neel Guest Lecture

0918-SomermanThe leader of NIH’s efforts to improve dental, oral, and craniofacial health, Martha J. Somerman, DDS, PhD, will deliver the first Honorary Guest Lecture of the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO EXPOSM Sunday.

The “H. Bryan Neel III, MD, PhD. Distinguished Research Lecture” will be presented from 2:15 pm-3:15 pm Sunday in Ballroom 6A.

Dr. Somerman is director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) of the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Somerman’s research has focused on defining the key regulators controlling development, maintenance, and regeneration of oral, dental, and craniofacial tissues. She has received numerous honors and awards, including the Paul Goldhaber Award, the leading award presented by the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

“In her role as director of the prestigious NIDCR, Dr. Somerman will provide an overview of the priority research areas for the Institute, its organization, and practical tips for successfully obtaining NIDCR funding,” said Lisa E. Ishii, MD, MHS, coordinator of AAO-HNSF Research and Quality. “She will also describe how the NIDCR relates to other NIH institutes. Her session will be highly informative for all Annual Meeting attendees, as she promises to provide concrete examples of resources available to all.”
