New Workshops to Cover Endoscopy, Ultrasound, Coding

Three new Pre-Conference Workshops will be presented Saturday, September 17, to provide hands-on experience on salivary gland surgery and using ultrasound to examine the thyroid and parathyroid glands, and the transition from volume-based to value-based practice.

The workshop on volume-based medicine is a half-day session while the other two sessions last all day. Register for the workshops on the Registration page of the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO EXPOSM website.

AAO-HNS/F Hands-On Salivary Endoscopy Course (8 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits available through ACS)

This one-day course will address advances in minimally invasive salivary gland surgery. The morning session will feature didactic lectures. Following lunch, attendees will be given the opportunity to practice surgical techniques on cadavers with expert feedback from faculty members.

This course will be beneficial for otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, oralmaxillofacial surgeons, and related physician assistants and nurse practitioners. The workshop will be presented from 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Rohan R. Walvekar, MD, and Barry M. Schaitkin, MD, are the program directors.

ACS Ultrasound Course: Thyroid And Parathyroid Ultrasound Skills-Oriented Course* (8 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits available through ACS)

The goal of this course is to introduce the practicing surgeon to office-based ultrasound examination of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. The distinction of normal from malignant lymphadenopathy is emphasized with a demonstration of the comprehensive examination of lymph node basins in cervical zones I-VI.

The process of ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of thyroid nodules and enlarged lymph nodes will be demonstrated in didactic lectures. Other conditions that may mimic thyroid pathology or are relevant to an understanding of cervical ultrasound also will be illustrated. In addition, skill sessions will allow surgeons to learn varied techniques of FNA of lesions in phantom models.

Patient volunteers with thyroid and parathyroid pathology and lymphadenopathy will allow an opportunity for supervised hands-on experience with transverse and longitudinal ultrasound methods. The course will be presented from 8:00 am-4:30 pm. Lisa A. Orloff, MD, and Russell B. Smith, MD, are the course directors.

*Pre-Requisite:“Ultrasound for Surgeons: The Basic Course, 3rd Edition online course” is a pre-requisite module that must be completed prior to attending this program. The Basic Course is available online and must be purchased separately at the ACS E-Store.

The Business of Medicine-Changing Landscapes

Sponsored by the Association of Otolaryngology Administrators

The upcoming changes involving value-based medicine and how to set up your practice for success will be discussed. Speakers will review ENT coding, modifiers, and frequent surgical codes. Compliance continues to become more important in medical practice, and key points on compliance will be identified.

A panel will interact with the audience on what’s ahead for 2017 and how to make sure your practice is positioned for success during the changing landscape of healthcare today. This workshop is geared toward the managing physician but is open to all. It will be presented from 12:30 pm-5:00 pm.
