Four teams of residents will put their school spirit and otolaryngology knowledge on display Sunday during a challenging but fun quiz-bowl competition. Competing for the top prize will be three-member teams from the University of Maryland, Stanford University, Yale University, and the University of Kentucky.

A team of otolaryngology residents from the Mayo Clinic won the 2016 AAO-HNSF Academic Bowl.

The four teams will battle to see who can be first to correctly answer multiple-choice questions developed by the Academy’s eight education committees, said Sonya Malekzadeh, MD, the moderator of the competition. Audience members are invited to cheer for teams and provide their own answers using an audience-response system.

The teams were selected from among medical schools with the highest scores on the AAO-HNSF Home Study Course. The winner of the Academic Bowl will receive a free two-year subscription to the Home Study Course for its school. The second place team will receive a one-year subscription.

“The different groups competing bring fun, flair, and atmosphere to the event,” Dr. Malekzadeh said. “Faculty and residents come and have a good time.”
