Annual Meeting Breaks New Ground

The southern charm of Atlanta, Georgia, was on full display at the Georgia World Congress Center for meeting attendees who came from all 50 states and 69 countries from around the globe for the opening of the 122nd Annual Meeting.

“We’re delighted you are here attending the ground-breaking education sessions, networking with colleagues, and previewing the latest products and services in the OTO Experience—whether you’ve come from a few miles across town or made the long journey from the other side of the globe,” said Gavin Setzen, MD, AAO-HNS/F President, echoing Georgian hospitality at the late-day Welcome Ceremony of the AAO-HNSF 2018 Annual Meeting & OTO Experience.

The Sunday program launched briskly into robust education events, including the Best of Orals Scientific Presentations, Rapid Poster Sessions, Panel Presentations, and Expert Series in 11 specialty tracks. It also brought back the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, in which Dr. Setzen ceremoniously opened the doors to the OTO Experience for attendees to preview the latest products and services related to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

Attendees gathered for the newly formatted Welcome Ceremony and the premiere of ENThealth.org, the AAO-HNSF’s new, dynamic patient health website. In an Apple-esque presentation, James C. Denneny III, MD, AAO-HNS/F CEO/EVP, donned a black turtleneck to debut the latest AAO-HNSF innovations, doing his best impersonation of the traditionally garbed Steve Jobs, Apple Computer co-founder.

“This is a day I’ve been excited about for a long time. Every once in a while, a product comes along that changes everything. We at the Academy have been fortunate enough to work on a few of these lately. A website. Interactive modules. A delivery system. Are you getting it? These are not three separate products. These are all one product, ENThealth,” said Dr. Denneny.

Portraying a likeness to Jony Ive, Jobs’ counterpart, Dr. Setzen revealed the many attributes, value, and vision of ENThealth. “ENThealth.org is a patient destination positioning the AAO-HNS/F as THE trusted source for patient-centered otolaryngology-head and neck surgery information.”

Dr. Setzen also shared a video that was developed to help promote public understanding of the otolaryngology-head and neck surgery specialty and increase awareness of the diversity of conditions and diseases treated by the specialty. According to Dr. Setzen, this video, which will be housed on ENThealth.org, “answers the proverbial question on every patient’s mind—what exactly IS an otolaryngologist?”

The Welcome Ceremony also saw Dr. Setzen award Presidential Citations to Peter J. Koltai, MD, Steven M. Parnes, MD, and Michael Setzen, MD. “Presidential Citations recognize individuals who have influenced me profoundly, both professionally and personally, and who have given to the specialty in significant ways, making a lasting impression through their outstanding contributions and dedication to the Academy, the Foundation, or to medicine.  It is a privilege to recognize the 2018 Presidential Citation recipients who are joining me on stage.”

As the first day of the Annual Meeting came to a close, attendees enjoyed a networking opportunity like no other at the President’s Reception. Held at the world-renowned Georgia Aquarium, old friends met new against the backdrop of the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere, housing more than 100,000 animals in over 10 million gallons of water.
