Annual Meeting Embraces ‘We Are One’ Theme

The AAO-HNSF 2018 Annual Meeting & OTO Experience embodied the theme “We Are One,” as otolaryngologists from around the world gathered for four days of education and networking, with a focus on patient care, to advance the specialty and their practices.

Attendees from all 50 states and 69 countries gathered for the event—the 122nd Annual Meeting. The meeting also featured the OTO Experience, which included innovative products, technology, coding, and an array of services from more than 250 exhibitors.

“We are here in Atlanta celebrating the remarkable collaboration, friendship and camaraderie that is the bedrock of the relationship between the AAO-HNS/F, its members and the great countries and patients that we all represent and care for,” said Gavin Setzen, MD, AAO-HNS/F President, at the Welcome Ceremony. “We’re delighted you are here attending the ground-breaking education sessions, networking with colleagues, and previewing the latest products and services in OTO Experience.”

ENThealth.org Launches

One highlight of the conference was the premiere of ENThealth.org, a patient-facing website. During the Welcome Ceremony, Dr. Setzen, along with James C. Denneny III, MD, AAO-HNS/F EVP/CEO, previewed the new dynamic patient health website that provides a much sought-after roadmap for consumers navigating ENT health-related symptoms and conditions for themselves and their loved ones.

“ENThealth.org is a patient destination positioning the AAO-HNS/F as THE trusted source for patient-centered otolaryngology-head and neck surgery information,” said Dr. Setzen.

The content on ENThealth.org is created by ENT experts. It includes multiple interactive modules, including a soon-to-be-available symptom checker, expert videos, a “Find an ENT” resource, and more. The site also includes a video debuted at the Welcome Ceremony that helps promote the public’s understanding of the specialty and increases awareness of the diversity of conditions and diseases treated by ENTs.

A President’s Legacy for a New President and International Guests of Honor

“The Academy will continue to lead by controlling doubts, fears, and uncertainty, by replacing them with courage, faith, and conviction that we are doing the right thing for our patients, all around the world,” Dr. Setzen said as he bid farewell to his term as AAO-HNS/F President. “Together we will find ways to make the practice of otolaryngology less stressful, and more joyful and rewarding—providing each of us the unique gift, the privilege, and the ability to impact patients, their families, and loved ones every day.”

The conference also introduced the Academy’s 2018-2019 President, Albert L. Merati, MD.

Dr. Merati will continue the tradition of welcoming attendees from four International Guests of Honor at the 2019 Annual Meeting. He announced Peru, Philippines, Turkey, and the United Kingdom as the 2019 Guest of Honor countries.
