Spotlight this Week during #OTOMTG20: Pediatric Otolaryngology and Laryngology/Broncho-Esophagology

Education (CMEs) at your fingertips and at your convenience – that is the ongoing offering of the AAO-HNSF 2020 Virtual Annual Meeting & OTO Experience. Week five focuses on the latest science and practice in pediatric otolaryngology and laryngology/bronco-esophagology, continuing the exceptional education offerings, both live and on demand, that began September 13.

The specialty weeks demonstrate the commitment to the collaboration essential in “Bringing Together the World of Otolaryngology.” The cooperation among the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology (ASPO), the American Laryngological Association (ALA), and the American Broncho-Esophagological Association (ABEA) in this endeavor present attendees of the Virtual Annual Meeting with a plethora of opportunities.

Diego A. Preciado, MD, PhD

“These are most unprecedent times, with each and all of us being maximally strained on both a personal and professional level. Along with massive challenges posed by the ongoing viral pandemic, new opportunities for camaraderie, growth, and recalibration of our value system also arise,” said Diego A. Preciado, MD, PhD, ASPO president. “The AAO-HNSF Virtual Annual Meeting has demonstrated how the use of technology can dramatically impact collaboration with direct education exchange between societies, making the dissemination of knowledge more widely available to all.  While missing the power of direct personal networking, the virtual format does drastically improve the global reach for our shared content.”

Karen B. Zur, MD

ABEA has experience with virtual meetings and as Karen B. Zur, MD, ABEA president, shared they were one of the first when they held a one-day virtual symposium on April 24, 2020, that was open to their national and international members as well as allied societies. She further noted the value of virtual education engagement and collaboration in addressing patient care in times of the pandemic. “This insight and the ability to share in-the-moment updates, knowledge, and experience allowed changes in practice…and taught us how to safely care for our patients while protecting our trainees and colleagues. The expertise, education resource, and guidance from ABEA members alongside the AAO-HNSF global reach and leadership, have helped shape the otolaryngologists’ response to COVID-19 in an unprecedented and timely manner.”

Paul W. Flint, MD

That sentiment was echoed by Paul W. Flint, MD, ALA president, who shared that virtual platforms, both live and on demand have provided greater access with a key advantage being able to update material to create a living library. “The ALA Laryngology Online Curriculum is updated on a regular basis and the Laryngology Fellow Online Curriculum will soon be launched on the ALA YouTube channel. With respect to the global community, again, access is key.  As many of the ALA members have participated in both live and on-demand sessions, this material is preserved for all participants, both nationally and internationally.”

This specialty-focused week also features Expert Lectures and Panel Presentations, in addition to all the on-demand content, including Scientific Oral Presentations and ePosters, on sleep disorder conditions.

It is with great enthusiasm that the AAO-HNSF 2020 Virtual Annual Meeting & OTO Experience designates week five of the meeting as the pediatric otolaryngology and laryngology/broncho-esophagology specialty-focused week.
