The festivities will begin on Saturday, October 3, with the WIO General Assembly featuring keynote speaker Nalini Nadkarni, MD, a professor of biology and director of the Center of Science and Math at the University of Utah. Dr. Nadkarni is perhaps best known for her pioneering work in the Costa Rican rain forest canopies.

“Dr. Nadkarni is such a role model for women in science that Mattel, in partnership with National Geographic, recently marketed the Entomologist ‘Treetop’ Barbie, inspired by her passion and commitment,” said Angela M. Powell, MD, Chair of the WIO Section.

Following the WIO General Assembly will be a speed networking event, during which WIO members will discuss with female leaders in the field their experiences and advice regarding issues such as underrepresented minorities, wellness, work/family balance, and more.

To end the evening, WIO is hosting a virtual gala to premiere a WIO History Video that features stories of women in the specialty dating back to the early 1970s. Despite the switch to virtual, Dr. Powell says attendees will be dressed to impress and are encouraged to gather with friends and family to celebrate the more than $140,000 the WIO has raised this year to support female otolaryngologists.
